Why Locals Love Jin Jiang Shanghai Restaurant
Nestled within the Best Western on Kingsway in Burnaby, Jin Jiang Shanghai Restaurant offers an authentic taste of Shanghainese cuisine, bringing a beloved regional Chinese culinary tradition right to the heart of British Columbia. This spacious yet slightly dated dining spot manages to preserve a nostalgic charm, inviting both longtime fans of Shanghai cuisine and curious newcomers to explore its distinctive menu.
The highlight here is undoubtedly the expertly crafted dishes that showcase the richness of Shanghai's culinary heritage. Diners consistently rave about the Shanghai dumplings (xiao long bao), featuring thin, delicate wrappers that are just the right balance—not overwhelmingly doughy—encasing juicy, flavorful fillings. These dumplings are a must-try and reflect the kitchen’s dedication to authenticity. Alongside these, the Shanghai fried noodles deliver a comforting, umami-rich experience that’s both satisfying and delightfully textured.
For those who appreciate a bit of spice and hearty flavors, dishes such as the Sautéed Beef With Chili Sauce (葱爆牛肉) and Shredded Pork in Chili and Garlic Sauce (鱼香肉丝) offer vibrant, bold notes that awaken the palate. Seafood enthusiasts will relish the Deep-Fried Prawn (苔条大虾) and the delicately steamed Clam with Egg Custard (蛤蜊炖水蛋), where freshness meets gentle seasoning, crafting an experience both light and memorable. The unique Sweet and Sour Pork (咕噜肉) delivers the classic balance of tangy and sweet with a crisp texture, completed by the homey touch of Shanghai's beloved flavors.
The restaurant also serves several intriguing cold dishes like the Beef Tripe with Chili Sauce (夫妻肺片) and the refreshing Shredded Chicken with Special Sauce (鸡丝粉皮), perfect for starting your meal or sharing among friends. Vegetarians will appreciate options such as the Bean Curd Wrapped with Mixed Vegetables (美味素鹅), thoughtfully prepared to ensure a delightful experience for all palates.
Jin Jiang’s atmosphere retains a sense of tradition, offering a large and clean dining space ideal for family outings or group gatherings. However, visitors should be mindful of the somewhat confusing parking situation, as the lot is shared with the hotel, and tight spaces can make parking challenging. Inside, the décor may feel a bit dated, but it serves as a comfortable and unpretentious backdrop where the focus remains firmly on the food.
Customer feedback paints a nuanced picture — while some dishes like the spicy beef brisket and Shanghai dumplings receive high praise for their quality and flavor, others such as the duck can fall on the drier side. The restaurant’s price point remains reasonable considering the generous portions and true-to-origin cooking style. The staff are often noted for their friendly, attentive service that enhances the dining experience.
For those yearning for an authentic Shanghainese meal with a diverse menu that ranges from chicken and pork specialties to fresh seafood and enticing cold dishes, Jin Jiang Shanghai Restaurant stands out as a cherished local gem. It offers a sensory journey to Shanghai’s vibrant food culture without leaving Burnaby — where every bite tells a story of tradition, heart, and culinary finesse.

Renovated a bit dated Parking is confusing as the parking lot is share with the hotel so wasn’t sure where I can park There’s a underground parking at the end but it’s all full and very tight space Food is hit and miss Didn’t like the XLB the dough was too thick and dry Spicy beef brisket was tasty The peanut mochi was super weird looking

The first time I visited Jin Jiang was back in 2014. It's somewhat hidden in the Best Western location on Kingsway and has a strange interior layout. Back then, their xiao long baos were under $5. Now, their steamed Shanghai dumplings are almost double the price ($9.68). But I do admit that they are better than I remember them to be. Filling is fairly juicy. Note that I've had them a couple of times over the last few weeks and found the filling to be different on different occasions. Sometimes being more meaty than other times. As a Shanghai restaurant, their dim sum offering is a bit limited compared to a Cantonese restaurant. We ordered their turnip cakes ($9.68) which were round cakes filled with shredded radish (we kind of ordered this thinking it was like the Cantonese lo bak go but this is much drier in consistency like a pastry). The fried shredded buns ($5.98) is a classic served with condensed milk for dipping. I know this more as silver thread buns (which can be either steamed or fried) due to the fluffy interior of the bun. The pan fried pork buns are basically the like the steamed pork buns but wrapped up like a soft bao and then pan fried for a crispy bottom. The bottoms were super crispy and the filling was still soupy. We also ordered the deep fried thick noodles with shredded pork ($18.98). Contrary to the English menu name, the noodles really aren't thick. I wish their menu names were more descriptive. Update - March 2025: Been about 7 months since our last visit. Love the silver thread buns here (either fried or simply steamed). The xlb are still pretty good. Also had a fried fish dish recently which was interesting but wish they would have given a different sauce other than ketchup.

The food was great. My favourite is the Shanghai dumpling, they use a thin wrapper which isn’t doughy. The fish in batter with seaweed was also one of my favourite! The duck on the other hand was very dry. You can never go wrong with the Shanghai fried noodle as well! Definitely would come again!

I think this restaurant may be the only one still has traditional Shanghai's dishes in Vancouver. We are happy that we still can enjoy the food in a well kept and clean big restaurant. The food and the prices are good. We come on a weekday for early dinner. The services are good too. If you go there for lunch, don't forget try their Chinese doughnut. It's the best in Vancouver.

Delicious food at a great price with friendly service! We enjoyed it so much that the only photo we managed to take was of dessert!

when you're craving home cooked Shanghai cuisine ... nothing fancy but comfort food. We had so much food for 11 people (8 of which are young people ) and still have leftovers ! Some orders are double too.

This well-established Shanghaiese restaurant in Burnaby has been around for quite some time. The food offers a decent quality, and the prices are fair. While the service isn't particularly outstanding, it's definitely worth giving a try.

I wasn’t aware this place had been here over a decade. It’s located within the best western hotel. I had family from out of town and we made reservations here. The place could use a bit of extra lighting and there were stacks of chairs along side the windows. But that didn’t discourage us because we came for the Shanghai food. The quality is pretty good The portions are good too They have a good price on bbq duck and the kids all loved the potstickers and soup dumplings that we ordered extra I would love to come back again and try their Shanghai breakfast.
